This is a panela producing pueblo (in Colombia, the panela industry is an important source of employment with about 350,000 people working in nearly 20,000 trapiches, panela farms). It was given this name because this was the area where royalist colonel Francisco Warletta settled his campamento (encampment) before the Chorros Blancos battle, where he was defeated by General José María Córdova during the wars of independence.

It has pristine natural settings with rivers and creeks which are perfect for swimming.
